MORE ACCESS TO MEDICAL CARE THROUGH TRAINING AND DIAGNOSTIC OPPORTUNITIES
In 2019, a strategic plan was developed to establish a medical care network. Since 2020, Nkhoma Hospital has been evolving from a district-level health facility into a national teaching hospital, serving as a training center.
Through the implementation of a surgical training program and a Laboratory Medicine Training Program, we aim to enhance patient care in the fields of surgery and laboratory medicine, making a positive impact on healthcare in Malawi.

The majority of the population in Malawi cannot afford even basic medical care.
Surgical procedures at Nkhoma Hospital range from €50 to €150, yet 85% of the population finds these costs unaffordable.
According to a study by Malawi Central Hospital, approximately one-third of Malawi's population requires surgical treatment for various illnesses.
To address this issue and provide surgical interventions and medical treatments to the most vulnerable individuals, we have established a patient fund.
A PATIENT FUND GIVES ACCESS TO MEDICAL TREATMENT

With a donation of just €50, we can provide the necessary treatment for a hernia and restore someone's quality of life, free from pain and discomfort.
For a donation of €150, we can perform a life-saving colon cancer operation, giving someone a chance at recovery and a healthy future.

What does it take to save a life?
One example of the impact of our project
In October, we received five-year-old Madalitso K. (name redacted by us to protect the patient's privacy) at our hospital, who was suffering from severe pneumonia. His right chest was filled with 90% pus, posing a life-threatening condition. Due to poverty, his parents had been unable to seek medical care for him earlier. Our surgical team, as part of our surgical training program, inserted a chest tube (thoracic drainage) to drain the pus, which remained in place for a week.
Additionally, the young boy required intensive medical care for several days, made possible by our training program at Nkhoma Hospital. Daily monitoring of his blood values by the laboratory enabled targeted administration of life-saving medication. Through the laboratory medicine training program, the quality of the laboratory has significantly improved, making the lab values reliable indicators for treatment.

After challenging 10-days, Madalitso was discharged in good health.
And what about his treatment costs? Fortunately, we were able to cover these costs through the patient fund.
